IP Lookup in IPv6 Networks

چکیده

The IP Lookup Process is a key bottleneck in routing because of increasing routing table sizes, increasing traffic, higher speed links, and migration to 128-bit IPv6 addresses. The IP routing lookup involves computation of the best matching prefix (BMP) for which existing solutions, such as BSD Radix Tries, scale poorly when traffic in the router increases or when employed for IPv6 address lookups. In this paper a distributed memory organization technique for the routing table was described, which performs extremely well for IPv6 address lookup. This mechanism provides lookup for a maximum of 16 IPv6 addresses simultaneously. In each lookup subsystem, a scheme for BMP using binary search on hash tables organized by prefix length was proposed. An optimized storage mechanism for binary search on hash table scheme is also presented. Using the proposed techniques a router can achieve a much higher packet forwarding rate and throughput. Keywords— IP lookup, IPv6, Distributed Memory Organization, Binary search, Hash table.

Helix: IP lookup scheme based on helicoidal properties of binary trees

In this paper, we propose an IP lookup scheme, called Helix, that performs parallel prefix matching at the different prefix lengths and uses the helicoidal properties of binary trees to reduce tree height. The reduction of the tree height is achieved without performing any prefix modification. Helix minimizes the amount of memory used to store long and numerous prefixes and achieves IP lookup a...

A Survey of Hash Tables with Summaries for IP Lookup Applications

Efficient IPv6 packet forwarding is still a major bottleneck in todays networks. Especially in the internet core we are faced with very large routing tables and a high number of high-speed links. In addition economical restrains exist in terms of manufacturing and operation costs. So demand is high for efficient IPv6 packet forwarding mechanisms. In the last few years a lot of work has been don...

Efficient IP forwarding engine with incremental update

Nowadays, the commonly used table lookup scheme for IP routing is based on the so-called classless interdomain routing (CIDR). With CIDR, routers must find out the best matching prefix (BMP) for IP packets forwarding, which complicates the IP lookup. Since the IP lookup performance is a major design issue for the new generation routers, in this article we investigate the properties of the routi...
